Top Tips for a Calm Christmas

Would You Like to Feel Calm This Christmas?

Christmas should be a time to relax and spend time with our loved ones, but often the stress of making Christmas “perfect” or trying to get on with our families can turn it into a dreaded experience.  Here are some great ways to keep the stress down this year to help you have a happy, relaxing, calm Christmas:

Top Tips for a Calm Christmas

Tip 1: Everything in moderation

It may be the season to be jolly, but too much food and alcohol is harmful.  I don’t want to be a stick in the mud but too much alcohol knocks out your lovely feel good hormone serotonin so if you know you want to be at your best it might be wise to limit your intake.

Tip 2: Get enough sleep

Plan for as many early nights as you can.  When we sleep we don’t just restore our bodies, we restore our minds too, helping us to process all the events of the day and removing much of the emotion that gets tied up with those events too helping us to be able to look at them with a clear, calm, rational mind.

Tip 3: Keep moving

Keeping up your regular exercise routine can give you the fitness and stamina to make it through the demands of the festive season.  Exercise also ensures a good steady flow of serotonin helping to keep you happy and positive regardless of the chaos going on around you!

Tip 4: Plan ahead

Not just the shopping, finances and cooking, but the stress as well. This means recognising the triggers that are likely to cause you stress and coming up with a plan of action that can prevent it from happening or make it easier to cope with. Talking it over with someone else might give you a completely different perspective that you hadn’t thought of before.

Tip 5: Give yourself spending limits

Stick to what you can afford and you will start the new year feeling in control of your finances not feeling overwhelmed at the size of your credit card bill.

Tip 6: Take time out for yourself

Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, really help to tackle stress.  Why not try some yoga or mindfulness or book yourself in for a mini-treatment.  Or go for a lovely walk by yourself – you could even try leaving your phone behind!

Tip 7: Be comfortable with “good enough”

Perfection is almost never needed – even at Christmas! So let yourself off the hook and stop striving for perfection. Will it be the end of the world if your Christmas dinner doesn’t have all the trimmings?  Will anyone even notice except you? Don’t compare your Christmas to that of others, or what you’ve seen in magazines or on the TV – this is your Christmas and the most important thing is to enjoy it!
