New Term, New Headspace: How to Reduce Stress During the School Year

As a busy mum of two who works with professional women and mothers every day, Desiree (from Inspired to Change Bromley) understands just how quickly the excitement of a new school term can give way to stress and overwhelm. In this blog, she shares why “back to school” stress builds so quickly, along with simple, practical ways to stay calm, protect your wellbeing, and start the new term with confidence.

Starting the School Year on the Right Foot

September brings a collective shift unlike any other time of year. For parents, it often feels like a “Second New Year” – a season filled with new school uniforms, crisp planners, and the hopeful promise of a calm, organised, and wonderful new school year.

As professional women and mothers, we start the month with the best intentions. We map out our mornings, commit to positive habits, and promise ourselves that this term, we’ll stay calm, prepared, and ahead of the game.

When Plans Meet Reality

Then, reality arrives.

After the easy-going pace of summer, we’re suddenly hit with an avalanche of school emails, club schedules, missing PE kits, and ramping work deadlines. The invisible load doubles in the blink of an eye.

Before September is even halfway through, that hopeful energy can morph into a familiar sense of survival mode. We find ourselves reacting rather than responding, relying on endless caffeine and a sweet treat just to get through the afternoon, feeling like we’re back on the exact same exhausting hamster wheel—holding on by a thread and wondering, How on earth did we get back here so quickly?

The secret to starting the school year strong isn’t about striving for perfection or creating a rigid, colour-coded master schedule (much as I love a colour-coded planner!).

True, lasting balance comes from consistency. Consistently taking small, simple steps to protect your peace and stay organised will always beat being super-organised for three days, only to burn out by Wednesday.

Back to School Stress: What’s Happening in Your Brain?

When our daily routine suddenly shifts, our primitive survival brain can take over very quickly.

The primitive brain dislikes change. It perceives this sudden rush of demands as a threat and can’t distinguish between genuine physical danger and a chaotic school run or an inbox overflowing with emails. When it senses overwhelm, it steps in to protect us by triggering anxiety, stress, or anger.

This is why we might find ourselves snapping at the children, reaching for a chocolate bar for quick energy, and then lying awake at 3am with a thousand thoughts racing through our minds.

Every unexpected email, late assignment, or rushed morning drops into our internal Stress Bucket. When that bucket overflows, our primitive brain takes the wheel, making it much harder to access our calm, logical Intellectual Mind—the part of the brain that helps us make thoughtful, balanced decisions.

Small Evening Habits That Make Busy Mornings Easier

To keep your stress bucket as empty as possible during busy term times, simple, consistent habits really are everything.

In my own home with my two boys, I’ve found that spending just 10 minutes every evening sets our entire next day up for success. I take a few small, quiet steps to make the following morning as effortless as possible:

 • Prepping school lunches and checking that PE kits are actually in school bags.
 • Laying out school uniforms, making sure we still have two school shoes, and preparing my own clothes for the next day.
 • Packing my work bag so I’m not hunting for keys or important documents at 7am.

These tiny evening habits mean we’re not starting our days in a frantic rush.

We also build positive rewards into our routine. If our morning goes smoothly and everyone plays their part, we put on our favourite music and sing along in the car on the way to school. It’s a simple, joyful way to boost our serotonin (the brain’s natural feel-good chemical) before the day has even properly begun.

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Helps With Back to School Stress

If you want this school year to be defined by calm rather than survival mode, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a modern, neuroscience-led approach to managing stress and anxiety.

Because our approach is entirely future-focused, we don’t dig up past struggles. Instead, we focus on where you want to be and how to strengthen your logical Intellectual Mind, so you can navigate the new school year with greater clarity, confidence, and ease.

In our clinical sessions, we:

 • Focus on the positives: We celebrate what’s already going well and identify small, practical steps you can take to make everyday life flow more smoothly. These ideas always come from you, so they fit naturally into your life.
 • Use restorative trance: Guided relaxation (which mimics natural REM sleep) helps clear away day-to-day emotional clutter and systematically empties your stress bucket.
 • Build lasting neural pathways: Over a series of weekly sessions, your brain develops stronger habits of calm, resilience, and confidence, allowing you to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

You don’t have to carry the mental load of the new school term by yourself, and you don’t have to wait until burnout forces you to make a change. You can step off the hamster wheel, enjoy your family, and move through this term feeling genuinely calm, capable, and strong.

At Inspired to Change, we’re a nationwide team, so support may be much closer than you think.
